Pakistan is home to over 2.3 million active freelancers, one of the top five freelancing markets in the world. In 2023-24, IT and IT-enabled services brought in over $3.2 billion in export earnings, up 24% on the year before. The talent is here. The demand is here. The hard part is how to receive payment from abroad in Pakistan without losing a chunk of it.

If you've ever invoiced an international client, you know what comes next. Days of waiting. Layers of fees. Conversion losses you didn't expect. And somewhere in the middle, a nagging worry that your account could be flagged, frozen or closed without warning.

HandlePay was built to fix this, not with another platform that treats you like a compliance risk, but with an account that puts you in control of your money from the moment it arrives.

How do Pakistani freelancers receive payment from abroad today?

Most use one of three routes: a SWIFT wire into a local bank, Payoneer through Upwork or Fiverr, or Wise where it's available. PayPal isn't available in Pakistan at all. Each route costs something, through transfer fees, conversion spreads, annual fees or days of waiting.

Each option comes with its own limits.

  • SWIFT wire transfers are the standard for direct client payments, but they're expensive. Sending fees often run $25 to $50, receiving fees add $10 to $30, and intermediary banks can deduct more along the way without notice. A $1,000 payment can lose $50 to $100 before it reaches your bank, and it takes three to seven business days.
  • Payoneer is the default for Upwork and Fiverr freelancers. It works, but the costs add up: a currency conversion markup above the mid-market rate, fees to withdraw to a Pakistani bank, and a $29.95 annual fee if you receive less than $6,000 in any 12 months.
  • Wise offers transparent mid-market rates, but its availability for new users in Pakistan has been limited. Check wise.com before you rely on it.
  • PayPal remains unavailable for receiving money in Pakistan, as it has been for more than fifteen years.

Beyond fees, there's a deeper problem. These platforms hold your money. If your account is flagged for any reason, whether an unusual payment, a verification issue or a review nobody told you about, your funds can be frozen. All you can do is wait. Stories of freelancers losing access to months of earnings are common enough that most keep a backup plan, or live with the worry of not having one.

What is a better way to get paid as a freelancer in Pakistan?

Get paid into a dollar account in your own name that only you control. Your client pays by US bank transfer or the app they already use, the money arrives in dollars, and you decide when to convert to rupees and withdraw to your Pakistani bank. No platform holds your earnings hostage.

That's how HandlePay works. It's built for people in Pakistan who earn from the world.

How does HandlePay work?

  • Step 1: Download the app. Claim your username and secure your account with Face ID or your fingerprint. No seed phrases, no complicated setup.
  • Step 2: Open your dollar account. Verify your identity once and you get US account details in your own name, ready for ACH and wire payments.
  • Step 3: Share your details with your client. Send your US account details for a bank transfer, or create a payment link so clients can pay with apps they already use, such as PayPal, Venmo, Wise or Cash App.
  • Step 4: Get paid in dollars. The payment lands in your account in dollars, in your own name. Nothing is converted until you say so.
  • Step 5: Hold, spend or withdraw. Keep your balance in dollars, send it to another HandlePay user instantly, or withdraw to any Pakistani bank in PKR whenever you choose.

What does this mean for a freelancer earning $2,000 a month?

Take a freelancer earning $2,000 a month, $24,000 a year. At a 3.5% all-in cost with a typical platform, that's about $840 a year lost to fees and spreads. Paying $50 per SWIFT wire every month costs $600 a year before any conversion loss.

That money is yours. Over five years it adds up to thousands of dollars. Just as important, you avoid the unpredictable risks of custodial platforms: frozen accounts, delayed withdrawals, verification loops and the constant need to prove you're legitimate.

Before you convert, always compare the rupees you'll receive against the mid-market rate. Our guide on why you get fewer rupees than the Google rate shows how to check it in under a minute.

Do I have to prove myself every time I get paid?

No. You verify your identity once when you open your dollar account. After that, you don't send invoices, contracts or explanations for every payment, and no third party can quietly put your earnings under review.

One of the most frustrating parts of existing payment options is the assumption that you're a risk. Banks ask for proof of income, client contracts and invoices. Third-party payment flags trigger reviews that take weeks.

HandlePay is designed around a simple assumption: you're legitimate, because you are. Verify once, get paid, and spend your money.

What's coming next?

We're adding more ways to get paid, including more payment apps and accounts in more currencies, plus payroll tools so companies can pay Pakistani contractors directly through HandlePay.
