The best bank account for freelancers in Pakistan is close to the same at every bank, because all follow one State Bank framework: a rupee account plus a dollar account, keeping $5,000 a month or 50% in dollars, whichever is higher. Pick on the extras: UBL for currencies and a free e-PRC, Meezan or HBL for instant Payoneer withdrawals.

None of them gives you a US routing number, so a US client still has to wire you. That's where an app with US account details fits in, and we cover it below.

It's a choice worth getting right. Pakistani freelancers earned a record $1.76 billion in FY26, according to State Bank data reported by Profit on 21 July 2026.

Here's how the main options compare, checked on each provider's own pages on 1 November 2026.

Key takeaways

  • All bank freelancer accounts work the same way: a PKR account linked to a dollar account (ESFCA), opened online, with the same $5,000 or 50% retention rule.
  • UBL holds the most currencies (USD, GBP, EUR, AED and SAR) and lists e-PRC as free for everyone.
  • Meezan and HBL let you withdraw Payoneer funds in real time inside their apps.
  • Pakistani banks receive dollars from abroad by SWIFT wire. For US clients paying by ACH, you need US account details from an app.

Which bank account is best for freelancers in Pakistan?

For most freelancers, UBL's Freelancer Account is the strongest all-rounder: no minimum balance, five currencies and a free e-PRC. Choose Meezan if you want Islamic banking or Payoneer withdrawals with an emailed PRC, and HBL if you're new to it and want instant Payoneer withdrawals. The retention rule is identical everywhere.

The accounts look different on each bank's page, but the State Bank sets most of the product. Its October 2023 circular set one framework for freelancer accounts: you open a rupee account plus an Exporters' Special Foreign Currency Account (ESFCA), in person or remotely. The bank then splits each payment from abroad. Part stays in dollars and the rest is converted to rupees.

So compare what the framework leaves to each bank: currencies, cards, minimum balance, the PRC and Payoneer.

What do all freelancer bank accounts have in common?

Every freelancer account pairs a rupee account with a foreign currency account (ESFCA). You keep $5,000 a month or 50% of export proceeds in dollars, whichever is higher, and the rest converts to rupees at the bank's rate. Accounts open digitally with your CNIC, and most have no minimum balance.

Two changes from April 2026 apply at every bank. The State Bank said banks must credit the full retention amount unless you ask in writing for less, and process inward export receipts within one working day. It also raised the Form R threshold to above $25,000, so you give one declaration of your services when you open the account instead of a form per payment, as The News reported on 7 April 2026.

The retention rule is the part to check against your income. If you earn $3,000 a month, the $5,000 floor keeps all of it in dollars. If you earn $12,000, half of it, $6,000, stays in dollars and the bank converts the other half the day it lands.

How do Meezan, UBL, HBL, Alfalah and Allied compare?

They differ on the extras. UBL has five currencies, an FCY Visa debit card and a free e-PRC. Meezan is Islamic and pairs with Payoneer. HBL gives a USD debit card on the dollar account. Alfalah opens online through its RAPID portal. Allied gives a free UnionPay and PayPak card. Meezan and HBL take new customers only.

UBL Freelancer Account

UBL lets you keep USD, GBP, EUR, AED or SAR, useful if clients pay in pounds or dirhams. There's no minimum balance, and the dollar account comes with an FCY Visa debit card (first one free, PKR 300,000 a day abroad). e-PRC is free for every customer. Some fee waivers need a PKR 25,000 average balance.

Meezan Digital Freelancer Account

Meezan's account is Shariah compliant, as a current or savings account, opened in the Meezan Digital app with your CNIC, a biometric check and a selfie. It's for new-to-bank customers only. The dollar side holds USD, GBP or EUR. The big extra is Payoneer: link it in the Meezan app, withdraw in real time, and get a PRC by email.

HBL Freelancer Digital Account

No minimum balance, a PayPak debit card free for the first year, and a USD debit card on the dollar account. It's for new-to-bank customers aged 18 or over, and HBL quotes two working days to open it. Payoneer withdrawals are real time in the HBL app.

Bank Alfalah Freelancer Digital Account

Current and savings versions both pair a rupee account with a USD account, with no minimum balance and a debit card on each side. You open it online through Alfalah's RAPID portal.

Allied Freelancer Account

Allied asks for your CNIC and a self-declaration of freelance income, no salary slips. No minimum balance and a free UnionPay and PayPak card. Allied's page ties dollar retention to PSEB or P@SHA registration, so register first.

Which bank is best for Payoneer withdrawals?

Meezan Bank and HBL. Both let you withdraw Payoneer funds in real time inside their own apps, and Meezan says you get a PRC by email on each withdrawal. JazzCash also links to Payoneer for small, instant withdrawals from $1. At banks without an in-app link, it's a normal transfer, which Allied says takes 1 to 3 business days.

If you sell on Fiverr, which pays through Payoneer, this matters most. It doesn't change Payoneer's own 1.2% to 4% withdrawal fee. We worked through the full cost on a $1,000 payment in Elevate Pay vs Payoneer.

What's the best dollar account in Pakistan for remote workers?

If one company pays you a monthly salary from abroad, a bank freelancer account may not take you: HBL's, for example, excludes anyone employed by a single organisation. Remote workers paid as contractors in US dollars can use an app that gives US account details instead, so the employer pays by ACH like any US contractor.

Freelancer accounts are built for people selling services to clients abroad, and banks write that into the eligibility. A remote worker on a monthly contract has three practical routes:

  1. A regular foreign currency account at a bank. It receives SWIFT wires, and banks along the way can take a fee out before the money reaches you.
  2. An app with US account details. HandlePay, Elevate Pay and nsave give you a routing number and an account number in your own name, so a US employer can pay you by ACH.
  3. Your employer's payroll platform, if it pays out to Pakistan. Check its payout options first.

The name must match yours exactly and the payment must be in USD. We covered what a US payer needs from you in how to receive ACH payments in Pakistan.

Which payment method is best for freelancing in Pakistan?

It depends on who pays you. Fiverr sellers need Payoneer, ideally linked to Meezan or HBL. Upwork freelancers can use Payoneer or a direct bank method. Direct clients in the US can pay into US account details by ACH, like paying a local contractor. Clients in the UK, Gulf or Europe can wire a bank or an app with SWIFT details.

Plenty of freelancers keep one of each: a bank account for wires and a PRC, an app for ACH from the US. We compared every method, with Upwork's and Fiverr's fees, in freelancer payment methods in Pakistan.

Bank or app: which should you choose?

Choose a bank freelancer account if clients wire you, you want a branch and a card for spending abroad, or you want a PRC from your bank. Choose an app with US account details if US clients or employers pay you by ACH, or you want to keep all your income in dollars rather than 50% or $5,000.

A quick way to decide:

  1. Mostly Fiverr: Payoneer linked to Meezan or HBL.
  2. Mostly US clients or a US employer: an app with US account details, paid by ACH.
  3. Wires from outside the US: either works. Compare the incoming wire fee before you share details.
  4. You want to choose when to convert: an app keeps your whole balance in dollars. A bank freelancer account converts anything above your retention limit as soon as it lands.
