Who needs a USD account? If someone outside Pakistan pays you in dollars for your own work, you probably do. That covers most freelancers with clients in the US and most remote workers paid as contractors. It doesn't cover everyone. A company, an agency billing under its own name, or a seller paid only through Fiverr won't get much from a personal USD account today.

Most pages on this topic say "great for freelancers" and stop there. This one also tells you who it isn't for yet, so you can decide before you sign up. Everything below was checked on 23 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • A USD account gives you US account details, a routing number and an account number in your own name, so a payer can send you dollars by ACH or wire.
  • It fits individuals aged 18 or over who verify their identity once and get paid for their own work.
  • Direct clients are the easiest fit. Upwork has a route that needs checking first, and Fiverr doesn't pay straight to US account details.
  • A registered business or agency needs an account in the business's name. HandlePay Business is being built for that.
  • If you're paid in rupees, or you need a full US bank with checks and branches, a USD account isn't the answer.

Who is a USD account for?

A USD account is for people in Pakistan who get paid in dollars, in their own name, for their own work. Freelancers with clients abroad and remote workers paid as contractors fit best, especially when a payer asks for "US bank details." You need to be 18 or older and verify your identity once.

There are a lot of these people now. Pakistani freelancers earned a record $1.76 billion in foreign exchange in FY2025-26, up from $984 million the year before, according to State Bank of Pakistan data reported by Business Recorder. When that money comes from a US client, the first thing their accounts team asks for is a routing number and an account number.

Three questions decide whether a USD account fits you:

1

Does someone outside Pakistan pay you in US dollars?

US account details only take USD.

2

Is the money for your own work, invoiced in your own name?

The account is in your name, so the payee name should be yours.

3

Can your payer send ACH or a wire?

Those are the two ways money reaches US account details.

If you said yes three times, it's built for you. If you said no to any of them, the sections below explain where you stand.

The other reason people want one is timing. A payment that converts to rupees the moment it lands gets that day's rate, whatever it is. Money held in dollars waits until you choose to convert. We showed what that gap costs in why you get fewer rupees than the Google rate.

Can Upwork and Fiverr freelancers use a USD account?

Direct clients are the simple case. Upwork offers Direct to U.S. Bank for accounts that accept ACH, with strict name rules, and we're confirming it with a live payout before publishing a setup guide. Fiverr doesn't pay straight to US account details. Its payout methods are PayPal, Payoneer and bank transfer through Payoneer.

Direct clients

This is where a USD account does the most. You send your US account details with your invoice, and your client pays through their bank or accounting software as a normal domestic transfer. They don't need to send an international wire or sign up for a new platform.

Upwork

Upwork's help page says Direct to U.S. Bank is only for freelancers with a U.S. bank account that accepts ACH. It also says the name on the account must match your verified name on Upwork, and that a new method becomes active three days after you confirm it. A USD account is in your own name, so the name rule works in your favour. Whether Upwork accepts US account details from a USD account for this method is what we're confirming with a live payout. We'll publish the step-by-step once it lands, so don't switch your Upwork payouts before then.

Fiverr

Fiverr lists four payout methods: PayPal, Payoneer, bank transfer through Payoneer, and the Fiverr Revenue Card, which it stopped issuing in December 2022. None of them pays straight to US account details you enter, so we don't count Fiverr income as a fit yet. We compared every route in how to receive USD in Pakistan.

Can remote workers get their salary into a USD account?

Yes, if your employer pays you as a contractor by ACH or wire. Share your US account details the way a freelancer would and make sure the payee name matches yours exactly. If your pay comes through a payroll platform instead, check its payout options first. Deel payouts to HandlePay aren't confirmed yet.

Many Pakistanis working for a foreign company are paid as contractors rather than put on a US payroll. Each month they invoice or get paid a fixed amount, and the company's finance team sends it. For that team, your US account details look like any other US payee, and an ACH payment is a routine domestic transfer.

Two things to sort out before the first payday:

  • The name. Give your full name exactly as it appears on your verified identity. A payment sent to a nickname or a family member's name can be sent back.
  • The currency. Ask for USD. US account details aren't for euros or pounds, even if your employer is in Europe.

If you work for a Pakistani company that pays your salary in rupees, you don't need a USD account for that salary. It helps only with the money that arrives in dollars.

Can a business or agency get a USD account?

Not this one. A HandlePay USD account is personal and opens in your own name. A registered company, or an agency that invoices under its business name, needs an account in that name. HandlePay Business is a separate product being built for companies and agencies. Until it launches, this account fits individuals only.

What matters is who gets paid. A US company paying you for your work is fine. That's most freelance and contract work. The problem is when the invoice says "Studio Something (Pvt) Ltd" and the money lands in an account in your personal name. The payer's records won't match, and you'd be mixing company money with your own.

The same goes for a small agency that collects one payment and splits it across a team. Each person on that team can get their own USD account for their own work. The agency itself should wait for HandlePay Business.

Who can't use a USD account yet?

Anyone under 18, anyone who wants payments in another person's name, companies that need a business account, and Fiverr sellers for their Fiverr income. Deel and Payoneer payouts aren't confirmed yet. And if you need US checks, a US branch or a US credit history, a USD account won't give you those.
  • Under 18: HandlePay's terms say the service is for people aged 18 or over.
  • Someone else's money: the account is in your name, so your brother's client should pay your brother.
  • Companies and agencies: they need HandlePay Business.
  • Fiverr income: Fiverr's payout methods don't pay straight to US account details.
  • Deel and Payoneer: check back here before you change your payout method on either.
  • People who want a full US bank: a USD account is for receiving payments. It doesn't come with checks, a branch or a US credit file. We explained the difference in can you open a US bank account from Pakistan.

When you don't need a USD account

You don't need one if every rupee you earn comes from Pakistan, or if your only foreign income comes through a platform that doesn't pay to US account details.

You might also be covered by a freelancer account at a Pakistani bank. Under the State Bank's October 2023 framework, freelancers can open these accounts digitally and keep 50% of their export proceeds or $5,000 a month in foreign currency, whichever is higher. What they don't give you is US account details. A US client still has to send an international wire, which costs them more and takes longer than ACH.

You can keep both: a USD account for clients who want to pay a US account, and a bank freelancer account for everything else.
